Working with the USD/CNH series
This is the offshore renminbi (CNH), created in 2010 and tradable outside mainland controls — a different market from onshore CNY, and the two can and do diverge under stress. The series' defining event is 11 August 2015, when the PBoC's surprise fixing reform devalued the currency and CNH gapped beyond CNY. The pair is managed: long stretches of engineered calm punctuated by policy-driven repricing, which is the worst possible shape for models that infer risk from recent volatility.
