VXX is an unsecured debt note rather than a fund, and it holds short-dated VIX futures rolled continuously — in the normal upward-sloping futures curve that roll is a persistent cost, so the series grinds downward for long stretches and spikes violently in between. Buy-and-hold results on it are meaningless by construction, and repeated reverse splits leave an unadjusted long history discontinuous. There is also an issuer break inside this span: the original 2009 note reached final redemption on 30 January 2019, and the Series B note replacing it traded under a temporary ticker from January 2018 before taking the VXX symbol over. Confirm which instrument the file covers on either side of that handover. The 5 February 2018 volatility spike sits in the same window and is the obvious stress test.
