Working with the Apple Inc series
Apple's 4-for-1 split took effect on 31 August 2020, inside this series' span, and it was consequential enough to reshape a different index: because the Dow is price-weighted, S&P Dow Jones Indices used that same date to swap Salesforce, Amgen and Honeywell in for Exxon Mobil, Pfizer and Raytheon, explicitly to offset the weight Apple's split removed. Two consequences follow. Check whether this file steps by roughly 4x across that date before computing returns through it — an unadjusted series shows a ~75% single-day loss that never happened. And any study comparing Apple against the Dow across 31 August 2020 is comparing two different indices either side of the line.
